Lake Habeeb - Rocky Gap State Park

Lake Habeeb is the large approximately 240 acre lake located near Cumberland, Maryland (Allegany County) in Rocky Gap State Park. This lake is man made and is about 75 feet deep maximum. It sits along the eastern side & southern most point of Evitts Mountain. The dam was built in 1970 and the State Park opened in 1974. The lake is a big portion of the recreation offered at Rocky Gap. Beaches, fishing, & canoe/kayaking are very popular. Rocky Gap also offers camping, a huge lodge and casino, as well as numerous hiking trails. Years ago I hiked here while I was a student at nearby Frostburg State University. We also used to come and "study" for finals at the beach in the spring when nice weather finally arrived.

Rocky Gap has always been popular and seen as far western Maryland by many people that live down state. Years ago; before Interstate 68 opened, the drive along US 48/40 from the Baltimore/DC metro areas was significantly longer than it is today. Today this drive can be done in just over 2 hours from both areas. This and the improvements (opening of I-68 in 1992) make this park more accessible. Rocky Gap tends to be one of the most busy State Parks in Western Maryland. Many other parks to the west in Garrett County (while well worth the drive to me) are an additional 3/4 to 1 hour drive. Here are a few pictures from a bright sunny morning at Lake Habeeb. I took these on my way to FSU for an Alumni event. Thank you!
