Patapsco Valley State Park - Daniels Area

The Daniels Area of Patapsco Valley State Park is the area between the Pickall Area (south) and McKeldin Area (north). This area is named after the nearby abandoned Town of Daniels. Daniels is/was located east of Woodstock and just north of historic Ellicott City, Maryland. Having had 2 previous names (Elysville & Alberton) Daniels was named in 1940 when the Daniels Company purchased the town which revolved around a textile mill. There was a US Post Office in the town for many years which closed in the summer of 1971. In the late 1960's the company gave notice that all of the town's housing would be closed within a few years. From what I have read - approximately 90 families resided in the town as of 1968. Tropical Storm Agnes caused a great deal of damage and especially flooding in 1972 across much of Maryland. Serious flooding along the Patapsco River Valley led to the destruction of many of the remaining structures. I visited this area last Fall. I did not hike the entire area (planning a return in the future) and did not get to see the various building ruins that exist from the town. However I did get pictures of the remaining Daniels Dam and the rail bridge.
